SUMMARY
Performs a variety of work in determining the availability of school bus drivers and dispatching buses and drivers in a timely manner. Maintains accurate operations records. Performs routine and/or standardized duties associated with secretarial, receptionist or clerical work and providing general office or program assistance.
NATURE AND SCOPE
Work is performed under general guidance of the Transportation Manager. Duties are normally routine in nature and follow well-defined practices and procedures. However, judgement and discretion are required to deal with emergency and/or unanticipated situations. Work involves performing a variety of clerical and secretarial duties and may include skilled typing, data entry, receptionist, record mainenance, filing and retrieval of information and reports. Work is normally completed independently. Work contacts extend beyond peers to parents, students, school site and District Office employees, and the general public. Well-developed communication skills are required. Work judgement may have a significant impact on costs, safety of students or the public, and/or legal liabilities. Work also involves performing a variety of clerical and secretarial duties and includes skilled typing and data entry.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a non-management position in the Transportation series, requiring specialized training or experience. Advancement along the Transportation line is restricted to the Transportation Router position or a Supervisory position, either of which will require additional formal training and/or experience in transportation management.
ESSENTIAL TYPES OF DUTIES (Examples)
May perform as a receptionist. May include answering incoming phone lines of the department.
Processes routine documents of moderate complexity requiring knowledge of special terminology, policies and procedures of department or area of specialized function.
Maintains records and files of documents processed for ready access, and compiles various reports according to well defined procedures.
Enters data into the computerized dispatch system. Maintains records and files of documents processed for ready access, and compiles various reports according to well-defined operating procedures. Ensures the timely distribution and receipt of a variety of records and reports. Requests or provides information as necessary to assure completeness and accuracy.
May compile statistical data, post routine financial transactions or other data and maintain various department fiscal accounts or other records. Searches out information in departmental records and files. Compiles data from various sources.
Maintains confidentiality of information processed or received during the course of performing assigned duties.
Operates a variety of office machines including computer terminal, typewriter, calculator, copier, two-way radio and other office machines and equipment. Receives, sorts, and distributes incoming mail.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and Skills: Requires a thorough knowledge of safe bus driving practices. Requires a thorough knowledge of the procedures, methods and techniques of dispatching school buses. Safe driving practices are essential. Must have good knowledge of the geographic and topographic characteristics of the community served by the District. Requires knowledge of the pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations pertaining to school bus operations and pupil transportation. Requires basic knowledge of office practices, procedures and equipment. Requires knowledge of general clerical, record keeping and report writing techniques. Requires strong telephone technique and etiquette.
Abilities: Requires the ability to perform all of the essential duties of the position with minimal supervision. Requires the ability to apply District and other applicable rules and regulations pertaining to pupil transportation. Must be able to operate a school bus, observing all pertinent safety and transportation regulations. Requires the ability to operate a two-way radio. Must be able to monitor and
coordinate a response to breakdowns and accidents in order to prevent interruption of service. Requires the ability to communicate with individuals both inside and outside of the District setting. Requires arm-hand and leg-foot dexterity to drive a school bus. Requires visual acuity including depth perception. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time. Requires hearing sufficient to be aware of traffic and road distractions/conditions while simultaneously listening to children. Requires hearing and speaking ability sufficient to communicate by phone or in person. Requires arm, hand, and finger dexterity to operate keyboard or other office equipment.
Education and/or Experience: High School diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of 3 years responsible bus driving experience required.
License or Certificates: Requires valid Commercial Driver’s License; medical examination card; valid California Special Driver Certificate and valid American Red Cross First Aid Certificate.
